I was told that the Bachelor's Degree is the new Associate's Degree.

No, you got it wrong. The Bachelor's Degree is the new black.

I had been saying the Bachelor's is the new high school diploma for the last couple years, but I think it depends on your field.

hey now Adam, we non education major teachers of English in Japan can't be too picky. We are near the bottom rung of the gaijin social employment ladder- above the fake rolex salesmen on the streets of ameyokocho and still higher than the soon burned-out roppongi bartenders, but not too much higher than nova teachers and waaaay below the cool jobs like Music Producer and Graphic designer or the Ambassador of Hati (who I met last week- cool guy and he talked about how much he loves Omaha Steaks).

But then again, one's major means practially nothing for Japanese 20 somethings in the job market... so go figure..

based on my current experience, i think that's the truth. and actually, in my case, an associate's might be more useful...
